Swedish steel prize nominee 2010
Bedspring with open design
2010 | Wranne/Fåhraeus Design AB | Sweden 6 min read
Can a bed take on a different look? Olle Wranne, CEO of Wranne Fåhraeus Design AB, took on that challenge. Using thin arcs of advanced high strength steel and a clever design he created a new bed that has more in common with a flying carpet than a traditional piece of bedroom furniture.
With no thick mattress, and an open design, the Wranne bed fits perfectly into the furnishings of a modern home. It has drawn a lot of attention at recent furniture exhibits, and was also the runner-up for the Swedish Steel Prize in 2010.
The goal is to launch this new product on the market in 2011.
Application: Bedspring with open design (see picture). The concept comes from designers associated with Chalmers University in Gothenburg.
Material: Docol 1200M. The spring is made of Docol with a thickness of 1.5 mm and a width of 80-140 mm.
The geometry of the leaf springs and the extremely high yield point of the selected steel provide the desired elastic properties. The design can also be used for sofas, armchairs, etc., with comfort equivalent to that of a contemporary mattress.
- Easy to assemble
- Small volume and weight for shipment
- Hygienic (no enclosed volume
- The spring can be customized
- Unique design
Wranne/Fåhraeus’ innovative bed spring solution allows a unique open design that demonstrates a brand new use for advanced high strength steel. This solution meets the requirements for comfort, hygiene, cost, and attractive design. The geometry of the leaf springs and the extremely high yield point of the selected steel (Docol 1200) provide the desired spring-cushioning properties.
